Celebrating Banned Books Week: The Freedom to Read
At Little Bogan Books, we believe in the power of stories—especially those that center and celebrate Black joy! As we recognize Banned Books Week (Sep. 22nd - 28th, we want to shed light on the unfortunate need for such a week, and the freedoms it represents.
Banned Books Week serves as a reminder of the ongoing challenges to our freedom to read. It shines a light on the books that have been challenged or banned in schools and libraries across the country, often due to their themes, characters, or messages. We are living in a country that is actively censoring certain voices...certain stories...the stories we are on a mission to help tell. This censorship can silence diverse voices and hinder important conversations about identity, culture, and history. Equally as important, it robs readers of an opportunity to be affirmed, inspired, or encouraged from books made to speak to them.
Celebrating Banned Books Week is critical for several reasons:
-
Promoting Diversity: Many of the books that face challenges celebrate diverse perspectives. By championing these stories, we help ensure that all children can see themselves reflected in literature.
-
Fostering Critical Thinking: Exposure to a variety of viewpoints encourages readers to think critically about the world around them. It’s important for children to engage with different ideas and narratives, allowing them to develop empathy and understanding.
-
Upholding Freedom of Expression: Banned Books Week advocates for the fundamental right to read and express oneself freely. It reminds us that literature can be a powerful tool for change and a means of voicing joy, struggles, and resilience.
-
Encouraging Conversations: When books are banned, it often leads to discussions about why these stories matter. We should embrace these conversations, as they can help dismantle stereotypes and promote a more inclusive society.
As an independent children’s book publisher, Little Bogan Books is committed to highlighting stories that celebrate Black joy and contribute to a richer literary landscape. This Banned Books Week, let’s stand together to protect the freedom to read and celebrate the stories that connect us all!
